Strengthening Organizational Culture Through Shared Leadership Experiences

Culture can be difficult to define, yet most can recognize its impact immediately. It shows up in everyday conversations, in how people work together and in whether employees choose to stay and grow with an organization. When leaders share a consistent approach to guiding performance and development, culture often becomes more intentional and sustainable.

That belief sits at the center of the partnership between consultant Ed Doherty of Ambrose Landen and The Center for Leadership Studies (CLS). After decades of professional experience and a long history with the Situational Leadership® framework, Doherty looked to build his consulting practice around a model he knew and trusted.

The Challenge

Ed Doherty set out to build a consulting practice rooted in the areas where he had the deepest expertise and experience. Having seen the impact of the Situational Leadership® Model earlier in his career, he wanted a solution that would help him support clients in a meaningful and practical way while differentiating his services in the marketplace.

At the same time, client organizations were looking for ways to create stronger workplace cultures, improve organizational performance and reduce the costs associated with employee turnover. Ed needed a proven, scalable leadership framework that could help him create lasting value for his clients.

Key challenges included:

  • Reducing turnover and its associated costs for client organizations
  • Providing leaders and employees with a shared approach to performance and development
  • Creating a more unified workplace culture
  • Supporting long-term organizational effectiveness through leadership growth

  • Experience: 40+ years
  • Focus: Culture development, leadership effectiveness and organizational performance

The Solution

To support these goals, Ed became certified in the flagship Situational Leadership® program, Situational Leadership® Essentials, and began delivering it to leaders within client organizations. He later expanded his certifications to include Situational Performance Ownership® and Situational Conversations™, creating additional opportunities to support a broader range of client needs.

Through the partnership, Ed introduced Situational Leadership® programs to organizations seeking a practical approach to developing leaders, reducing turnover and strengthening culture. In addition to leadership-focused training, he delivered companion programs for individual contributors, helping organizations establish a shared framework across multiple levels of the workforce.

Key components of the solution included:

  • Certification in multiple CLS programs, including Situational Leadership® Essentials, Situational Performance Ownership® and Situational Conversations™
  • Deployment of Situational Leadership® programs for both leaders and individual contributors across client organizations
  • Use of sustainment resources, including The Four Moments of Truth™, to reinforce application beyond the classroom
  • Engagement of senior executives in the learning process to support adoption and long-term cultural alignment

The Results

By leveraging Situational Leadership® programs and sustainment resources, Ed helped organizations create shared leadership experiences that supported culture development and organizational performance. Strong executive support, broad program adoption and meaningful business results reinforced the relevance and practicality of the approach. In one engagement, a rollout to more than 60 leaders was so well received that the client expanded its investment in the program. In another, the organization described the experience as a “real culture changer.”

The impact stretched far beyond just individual engagements. Positive client outcomes, including reduced turnover and stronger cultural alignment, helped establish Ed as a valued partner and trusted resource. As organizations continued to invest in leadership development, Ed’s partnership with CLS created a pathway for additional client engagements and long-term growth.
